Interns/Apprentices (April-October 2007)
Four working internship positions are available at Greenfields Organic Farm for this year.
We offer opportunities to learn and be involved with the production and marketing of our 15 acre certified organic market garden. Interns may start either in April or May, and must be able to work until late-October or mid-November.
Greenfields Organic Farm is an established, financially sustainable, certified organic farm located on 100 acres of rolling Niagara Escarpment land. We are 75 km northwest of Toronto, and 40 km southeast of Guelph, Ontario. We grow over 80 varieties of vegetables, and a few chickens for eggs and meat. Produce from our market garden is sold year round at farmer's markets in Guelph and Toronto, at our farm store, through a new roadside stand, and to wholesale accounts. Interns will learn about greenhouse management, variety selection, transplanting, direct seeding, soil preparation, fertility management, weed control (including the use of several hand tools), pest and disease control, composting, irrigation, mulching, marketing, and some biodynamic farming methods.
Interns will learn by fully participating in the day to day operation of our farm, and through some discussions and training sessions. Greenfields Organic Farm participates in the CRAFT program, which brings together interns and apprentices from participating farms once a month for a day of work sharing, lectures, and farm tours.
Interns are provided with comfortable, private accommodation in a separate bungalow. Full kitchen and bath, washing machine and living room are included. A weekly stipend of $100.00-$240.00, WSIB coverage, vacation pay, and farm produce are also provided.
Applicants should have a strong work ethic, a keen interest in organic farming, be able to lift heavy objects and able to work hard in all kinds of weather, sometimes completing lengthy, monotonous tasks.
